Department to start taking action against violations from Monday

Vikram operators of Dehradun claimed that the Transport department has not informed them about the ban on picking up passengers midway on their respective routes and they will continue to pick up passengers in the usual way. The regional transport office of Dehradun has stated that Vikrams hold contract carriage permits and as per Motor Vehicles Act, they are allowed to go from only one fixed stop to another on booking rather than picking up passengers anywhere along their routes.

The RTO has taken this decision after the Uttarakhand High Court’s recent stay on the proposal of the RTO to convert more than 10 years old auto rickshaws and Vikrams into clean fuel vehicles like CNG fuelled or electric hybrid vehicles. Rajendra Kumar from the Vikram Jan Kalyan Sewa Samiti said that they heard about it too but they have been operating in the usual manner across the city. “We have not been given any kind of information through the RTO or any other official. If the department takes any action against our usual way of operating Vikrams , we will also come up with a strategy to tackle the situation,” said Kumar. However, the RTO has stated that not picking up passengers midway is a rule for contract carriage permit holders and it does not need a separate reminder from anybody.

The officials said that such practices cause traffic issues across the city and the department will work to improve this situation in Dehradun and then other parts of the division. Action will be taken against the Vikram operators violating rules from Monday, as per the RTO.
