Amidst continuing protests by the public in Purola area of Uttarkashi district against alleged love Jihad, the Bharatiya Janata Party has stressed that it is not against any community in particular. The party stressed that raising public awareness is the most effective means to prevent love Jihad and religious conversion. Public awareness is especially important and more effective as police verification of people alone cannot be expected to prevent mischievous elements from carrying out their activities.
Talking to The Pioneer, the BJP State media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said that the cases of alleged love Jihad are unfortunate. However, he stressed that the party is not against any particular community. “Undesirable elements can be from any community. However, raising public awareness is vital to prevent love Jihad and other undesirable activities. The State government has come up with the strictest anti-conversion law in the nation. It is also working on the introduction of a Uniform Civil Code and strict land laws to prevent undesirable activities. Still, it is vital for the public also to be aware and support the government in its efforts as that is the best way to prevent such activities. Public awareness is also essential to ensure that the spiritual traditions and cultural heritage of Uttarakhand are retained,” said Chauhan.
It is pertinent to mention here that reportedly about a dozen cases of men allegedly concealing their religious identity and luring women into relationships have come to light in the State during a period of one month. The incident in Purola has elicited strong reaction from the local residents. At the same time, members of a minority community residing in the town, involved in various businesses, have stressed that the whole community should not be blamed for the misdeeds of a few mischievous elements. It is also worth mentioning here that the BJP and even some voluntary bodies have expressed concern on many occasions at the change in demography in various parts of the State.
