Police arrested an accused involved in thefts in the Raiwala area of Dehradun after an encounter which left him injured in Haridwar during the wee hours on Sunday. The operation targeted a gang of thieves suspected to be involved in recent thefts in the Raiwala area of Dehradun. During the chase, one suspect was injured while two others managed to flee. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that the pursuit began when police identified a suspicious i10 car linked to theft incidents in Raiwala. As the car moved towards Haridwar, the Bahadrabad police were alerted to intercept it. At a checkpoint near the Arogyam area, the suspects attempted to evade capture by speeding towards Baderi. The joint police teams from Bahadrabad and Dehradun gave chase. The situation escalated when the suspects opened fire on the pursuing officers. In self-defense, the police returned fire, injuring one of the suspects, identified as Farman, a resident of Nakur, Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Farman sustained a gunshot wound to his leg and was transported to Haridwar district hospital for treatment. The other two suspects, identified as Gullu and Gulfam, escaped and remain at large. Efforts to locate them are underway. Singh said that Farman is a notorious criminal with a history of over half a dozen thefts and burglaries across Uttar Pradesh, Dehradun and Haridwar. He has served jail time for these offenses in the past. During the operation, the police recovered a 315-bore pistol, spent cartridges, the i10 car used in the crime and three fake number plates. Upon searching Farman, the police found two live cartridges, a gold chain and a gold ring believed to be stolen. The SSP said that Farman’s arrest is a significant breakthrough but the search for his accomplices is continuing.
