Nuclear family also cause of anger among individuals: Experts

Tuesday, 13 February 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

Experts said that opting for a nuclear family has resulted in anger, frustration and temper issues among people, particularly young adults. They said this after a recent incident in Dehradun where a young man was murdered by two young adults after an argument related to a cigarette. According to the experts meditation and parental support can help young adults overcome the issues of anger and temper.

Commenting on the recent incident neuropsychologist Dr Sona Kaushal Gupta said that anger and loss of temper have become increasingly common in society. She attributes this to factors such as the influence of social media, which leads to sleep deprivation and ultimately causes frustration. Nowadays, individuals lack patience and seek instant gratification, which often leads to negative reactions. She further attributes the rise in anger issues among young adults to the trend of nuclear families, which has also resulted in reduced communication and interaction. It is crucial to control one’s anger at an initial stage to avoid pretension and the development of anti-social behavior. She suggested that individuals should consider meditation, spirituality and Yoga as means to prevent anger. Parents should closely monitor their children’s behaviour and seek counselling if any changes are noticed, she added.

Clinical psychologist Mukul Sharma said that the recent incident in Dehradun illustrates the growing prevalence of anger and frustration among individuals, particularly young adults, due to career stress, academic pressure and lack of support. In such emotional states, individuals may act impulsively without considering the potential harm from their actions, he said.

Sharma further said that the Covid-19 pandemic, together with the growing prevalence of nuclear families, has contributed to increased frustration and reduced patience among individuals. To avoid the negative consequences of anger, it is important for individuals to cultivate a sense of satisfaction within themselves. Further, parents should strive to engage in frequent communication with their children to prevent the chances of similar incidents that recently happened in Dehradun.
