Ending uncertainty with both the ruling NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc sticking to their respective candidates for the crucial post of the Speaker in the 18th Lok Sabha- Om Birla and K Suresh, Birla was finally elected to the post by voice vote. Notably, Suresh had filed nomination for the post with support from the opposition bloc but the latter did not press for division, thus facilitating uncontested election of the Speaker in continuation of the parliamentary tradition of India.
While the Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed Om Birla’s name it was supported by the Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Following his election, Birla thanked the Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for the smooth election. Modi later congratulated Birla on the beginning of his second term.
