A man died and five sustained serious injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in fell into a deep gorge early on Monday morning. The officials informed that the police received information around 4 AM that a vehicle carrying six people had fallen into a gorge in the Khairna area of Nainital district. The police left for the accident site and also called the search and rescue team of the State Disaster Rescue Force (SDRF) at the spot. The team led by the chief constable of SDRF Khairna post Dinesh Puri reached there along with the necessary equipment. The officials said that SDRF immediately started the rescue operation but the team was facing difficulties due to darkness in the early morning. The team took a considerable amount of time to locate the vehicle and rescue the victims in the dark and cold morning. The team rescued five people from the gorge who had sustained serious injuries and one person had died. The police took the injured to the nearest hospital while the body of the deceased was recovered and handed over to the police, said the officials. All the victims belong to Pithoragarh district as per the officials. They informed that the deceased has been identified as Chhatar Singh from Pithoragarh’s Didihat. The four injured have been identified as Suraj Singh, Jitendra Dasila, Santosh Mehra and Harish Kumar who belong to Pithoragarh’s Berinag area while the police are yet to get information about the fifth injured. The officials said that the police are investigating the matter and are yet to ascertain the cause of the accident.
