One dead, four injured as tourist car plunges into gorge in Chakrata

One person died and four sustained injuries when a tourist vehicle skidded off a road and fell into a 200-metre gorge near Lohkhandi Minar in Chakrata block of Dehradun district on Friday morning. The white Maruti car, carrying five individuals who had travelled from Dehradun for sightseeing, lost control due to slippery conditions caused by frost and plunged into the gorge approximately 20 kilometres ahead of Chakrata tehsil, as per the officials.
The officials informed that a local resident alerted the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) about the accident after which a rescue team, led by sub-inspector Manish Chauhan from the Chakrata post, rushed to the accident site with the necessary equipment. The team, along with revenue police, tehsil administration and local volunteers, initiated a challenging rescue operation, as per the officials. They rescued five people from the mangled car, including two women and three men.
The police transported the injured to the main road, where they were taken to the primary health centre in Chakrata via 108 ambulance services. During the primary treatment in PHC, one of the victims, Karan Rawat, a 24-year-old resident of Chamba, succumbed to his injuries. The remaining four victims identified as Akash (28) from Chamba, Rishabh (27) from Delhi, Vaishali (25) from Dehradun and Sapna (21) from Dehradun, were given preliminary treatment before being referred to a higher medical centre for treatment.
The officials said that the authorities had informed the families of the victims after admitting them to the hospital. They also urged travellers to remain vigilant and take precautions to ensure their safety while travelling in such conditions.
