One dead, three injured while returning from poll duty in Pauri

One person died and three got seriously injured in a car accident on their way to Dehradun from Pauri where they were deployed for polling duty on February 14. 

The station house officer (SHO) of Pauri police statin, Vinod Singh Gusain informed The Pioneer that four men who were deployed for the polling duty in different areas of Nainidanda block of Pauri were returning to Dehradun district on Tuesday morning when their car crashed on Pauri-Devprayag route and fell into a nearby gorge which was about 200 metres deep. He said that one of the men, 50-year-old Ranvir Singh Negi died on the spot and the remaining three persons were critical and immediately admitted to the nearby hospital for treatment where the doctors referred them to higher centre hospital. The district magistrate of Pauri, Vijay  kumar Jogdande also visited the hospital to check on the conditions of the injured men.

The injured include 45-year-old Narendra Gusain from Vikasnagar who is also the owner of the car and was driving it on Tuesday, 54-year-old Surendera Singh from Hathibarkala and Jai Singh from Rishikesh. He said that the men had deposited all the elections related items including electronic voting machines (EVMs) the same day of the election and had nothing in possession related to the polling duty during the accident.

On the question of the cause of the accident, the SHO said that so far it is being speculated that the man behind the wheel was drowsy and suddenly lost control of the car. The police are looking into the matter, added the SHO.
