One accused robber was shot dead in an encounter on Sunday night while the other was arrested hours later on Monday afternoon in Haridwar district. The duo was going on a motorcycle when they were hailed by the police for a check, but the duo tried to escape and shot at the police. Addressing a Press conference in the Police headquarters in Dehradun on Monday, the officiating director general of police Abhinav Kumar said that the encounter occurred in the Bahadrabad area around 10:30 PM on Sunday, as police chased down suspects involved in the daylight robbery at Shri Balaji Jewellers in Jwalapur, Haridwar, on September 1. Kumar said, “The police team was conducting a routine check of suspicious persons and vehicles at BHEL junction. The police attempted to stop two men on a motorcycle without a number plate, both of whom had covered their faces with white cloth. The pillion rider fired at the police team in an attempt to escape toward Bahadrabad market. The police pursued the suspects, who fled in the direction of Bhagwanpur Road. The suspects’ motorcycle slipped on a speed breaker near a bridge that forced them to abandon the vehicle and flee on foot. They fired at the police while running toward the forest. The officers, after issuing repeated warnings to surrender, returned fire in self defense, injuring one suspect. The second suspect escaped under the cover of darkness.” He said that a forensic team was called to the scene and a bag containing jewellery looted on September 1 was recovered. The injured suspect, identified as Satender Pal alias Lucky (32) from Muktsar, Punjab, was declared dead at the hospital. He had a reward of Rs one lakh on his head and had previous criminal cases registered in Punjab. The police also recovered a .32-bore pistol, along with live and empty cartridges and a motorcycle. Kumar said that on Monday at around 1:45 PM, Haridwar police arrested two more suspects, Gurdeep Singh alias Moni and Jaideep Singh alias Mana, from near Khayati Dhaba. The duo, also residents of Muktsar, Punjab, was found with eight stolen gold chains from the robbery. The police recovered jewellery worth about Rs 50 lakh from the three accused. The DGP said that efforts are ongoing to apprehend two remaining suspects, Subhash from Delhi and Aman from Pindi, Punjab.
