Reacting to the decision of the Union government to convene a special session of parliament and set up a committee on ‘one nation one election’ concept, the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara has said that the Modi government has got scared of INDIA alliance. He said that the ‘one nation one election’ idea is an old one but it cannot be implemented without proper preparations. Mahara said that the ‘one nation one election’ concept is being brought to the centre stage to divert the public attention from the real issues. He said that the Modi government is breaching all the traditions and parliamentary procedures and added that the government should have at least talked with the opposition parties before convening a special session of parliament.
He said that till the year 1967 the parliamentary and Vidhan Sabha elections were held at the same time but later this tradition got broken due to premature dissolution of some State assemblies and dissolution of Lok Sabha in the year 1970 . Mahara said that the government will have to bring an amendment bill to move ahead on the concept. He said that the country needs massive resources to hold all elections simultaneously in the country. The PCC president said that the idea of one nation one election is against the federal structure of the country.
