The Bharatiya Janata Party has claimed that the high-level panel’s recommendation of one nation, one election approved by the Union cabinet is in national interest. Stating that this will be a major step towards national progress, the BJP State media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said that it is unfortunate that the character of the Congress is limited to opposing reforms. Responding to the statements made by the leader of opposition in the Vidhan Sabha, Yashpal Arya, the BJP State media in-charge said that one nation, one election is a necessity. “Implemention of this system will prevent the unnecessary expenditure of public money on Lok Sabha, Vidhan Sabha or local body elections held at different times. This will rid the nation of the economic burden of holding elections at different times. Apart from this, different elections held at varied time periods result in the imposition of the model code of conduct, which also hinders the finalisation of policy decisions by the government, which in turn affects development. Holding all the elections simultaneously will ensure that the development works also continue smoothly,” he said.

Chauhan further said that India will not be the first nation to experiment with this system as this electoral system is being used in 12 nations already. A high-level committee of prominent experts considered the advantages and disadvantages of this system before submitting its recommendations. “Implementing this system in a nation like India will definitely boost the developmental process while also ensuring the economic strength of the nation. The Congress and its partners of the INDI Alliance have a habit of opposing all reforms planned in the nation. From NRC to the farm laws and UCC, they have done nothing apart from opposing such reforms. They have maintained a negative approach even on plans which are aimed at ensuring welfare of the nation and its citizens,” Chauhan added.
