Many parents in the State have demanded online classes for their children in schools during heavy rainfall. The State Education minister Dhan Singh Rawat had stated in a meeting recently that a monsoon vacation will be implemented in the State from next year to keep students safe during the rains. However, some officials and parents are not in favour of this proposal, stating that a monsoon vacation will directly affect the studies and minds of the students. Online classes would be a better option than monsoon vacation during heavy rainfall, the parents said.
Commenting on the proposal for monsoon vacation, a parent Geeta Uniyal said, “Covid-19 has already had a negative impact on students’ capabilities and minds. So I would say that a monsoon vacation may not be the best solution to cope with heavy rainfall. Online classes would be a better alternative and it would be helpful if the government suggested this to school management during heavy rainfall. This way the students can continue their studies while staying safe during heavy rain.”
Government teacher association office bearer Ram Singh Chauhan told this correspondent, “The proposal is yet to be implemented but I would recommend that the Education minister reconsider the proposal of monsoon vacations in the State. It is true that students living in mountainous regions may face more difficulties than students in plains during the monsoon season. However, monsoon vacation may negatively impact the students’ studies and their mental wellbeing. Instead, opting for online classes during heavy rainfall would be a better alternative.”
The president of National Association for Parents and Students Rights (NAPSR) Arif Khan said that student safety during heavy rainfall is a crucial factor that needs to be considered. He further stated that monsoon vacations may not be the best solution for ensuring safety. Instead, schools should be given the authority to grant leave or close the school during heavy rainfall. Additionally, online classes could be a better alternative for the students to cope with the adverse effects of heavy rain.”
