Dehradun police arrested 21 people for drunk driving during a night- long checking drive across Dehradun on late Sunday night. The police also seized their 21 vehicles as part of Operation Night Strike, launched to control traffic violations and prevent anti-social activities at night, said the Dehradun superintendent of police Pramendra Dobal.
“Police teams conducted surprise checks at border check posts and interior roads across urban and rural areas of Dehradun. More than 700 vehicles were checked and over 900 people were questioned during the operation,” he said.
Police also seized 34 other vehicles for traffic violations, including the use of black-tinted windows. Challans were issued against 53 drivers, with a total fine of Rs 32,500, while court challans were issued for 47 vehicles.
The police brought 57 suspicious people to police stations for questioning and verification. Action was also taken against 84 people under Section 81 of the Police Act and a fine of Rs 21,750 was imposed.
Dobal further said that the campaign is important as the police are increasing night-time checks to control drunk driving, traffic violations and anti-social activities. He has also directed police stations to identify students involved in hooliganism or activities that could disturb the atmosphere around educational institutions.
