A recent incident involving the alleged molestation of a minor girl by a youth from a minority community has sparked considerable outrage among local residents in Nandanagar in the Chamoli district. The incident, reported to have occurred three days ago, led to protests and demonstrations by the public, with locals expressing their anger and demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. Reacting to the incident, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami stressed that the dignity of females is foremost for the government. “We strongly condemn any unwanted incident occurring with any woman or girl. The law will ensure punishment to the culprit. Such incidents cannot be tolerated in Devbhumi,” he said.

According to sources, the accused was reportedly a barber and had been absconding since the incident came to light in public. In response to the escalating tensions, residents took to the streets on Sunday, raised slogans and demonstrated their discontent. The situation intensified further when agitated locals vandalised a barber shop in the area. In light of the sensitivity of the matter, a substantial police force was deployed to maintain law and order in the area. The Chamoli superintendent of police Sarvesh Panwar also reached the site and interacted with the locals to address their concerns and defuse the situation. He assured them that police are investigating the matter and will soon nab the accused. Panwar also appealed to people to not spread or believe in rumours that can disturb the harmony among communities and disrupt law and order in the district.
