Over 500 arrested for drunk driving in Dehradun

The police in Dehradun have intensified action against drunk driving, especially after the death of six youth who died in a fatal car accident on November 11. The police’s measures have resulted in over 500 arrests for drunk driving and significant penalties for public alcohol consumption in past two months, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said. He informed that 508 vehicles were seized and their respective drivers were arrested for driving under the influence.
Besides this, 2,265 individuals were also caught consuming alcohol in public places, such as roadside spots, forests or parked vehicles. Police brought them to police stations and imposed hefty penalties. The police collected a total fine of Rs 8.2 lakh under the Police Act accompanied by stern warnings to prevent repeat offenses. The Raipur police station emerged as the frontrunner in these efforts, carrying out the highest number of actions. Singh said that in the past two months, the Raipur police station registered 1,345 cases of public drinking, collecting fines amounting to Rs 4.87 lakh and apprehended 145 individuals for drunk driving with all their vehicles impounded.
The SSP said that with these impactful measures in place, the police aim to create a culture of accountability and deterrence. Public drinking and endangering lives through drunk driving will not be tolerated in Dehradun, he said.
