Amid incessant rain in the Udham Singh Nagar and Champawat districts for the past two days, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued over 600 people from waterlogged areas since the early early hours on Monday. Back up teams were also sent from Rishikesh to rescue the people stuck in waterlogged houses. Due to heavy rainfall in the Kumaon region, many areas of Champawat and plain areas of Udham Singh Nagar were completely submerged. Many houses were completely filled with water due to severe waterlogging. Hundreds of people got trapped on the roofs of their houses.
On receiving information about the above incident, the SDRF commandant Manikant Mishra directed the SDRF teams to reach the spot with necessary equipment and carry out relief and rescue work. He also sent a team from Rishikesh to Udham Singh Nagar at 4 AM as a backup. The SDRF rescued about 300 people stranded in Chhatarpur in Khatima area through rafts and dropped them to safe places. The backup team from Rishikesh took charge in Arvindnagar and Sitarganj areas and rescued over 170 people who were shifted to safe places by the respective district administration.
The SDRF also rescued 30 persons stranded in the submerged areas in Jagpura, Champawat in the wee hours of Monday. They were sent to the shelters in Banbasa in Tanakpur. Besides this, the teams also rescued about 100 people including children and super senior citizens and took them to safer places through rafts. The team also rescued 12 members of three families in the Tanakpur area after severe waterlogging in their area.
Mishra said that the SDRF rescue teams are handling the situation on a war footing amidst heavy rains. They rescued over 600 people on Monday and took them to safe places in both districts. This number can go over 700 by Monday midnight.
