At least 90 were killed in the rain-triggered, devastating landslides that struck Kerala’s hilly Wayanad district. The death toll might rise further as many more remained trapped, Kerala government sources said. The rescuers said that the body parts they were recovering were so mangled that it was difficult to ascertain whether these belonged to a single persons or multiple persons. They, however, confirmed that there were many women and children among those who were killed in the massive tragedy. The worst affected villagers are Mundakkai, Chooralmala, Attamala, and Noolpuzha villages and the people were marooned.
The Indian Army has swung into rescue operation, given the grimness of the situation. Besides, the NDRF, SDRF, State police and fire department have remained engaged in the rescue-related activities non-stop.
