A massive fire broke out in the Garjiya Devi temple complex near Ramnagar in Nainital district on Monday. The fire started after some Puja items caught fire and soon spread to all the nearby shops and stalls, the officials said. They said that all Prasad shops that were stocked full with Puja items ahead of Navratri were engulfed by the fire. This caused panic among the shop owners and devotees present at the spot. On receiving the information, the fire brigade and police team reached the spot to douse the fire. However, more than a dozen shops were engulfed in the fire by the time the authorities completely extinguished the fire.
The fire station officer Umesh Chandra Paragai said that as per the preliminary inquiry, it appears that a Chunni caught fire while lighting incense in a shop. It possibly remained unnoticed initially and soon spread to over a dozen shops in the complex. All shops along with their supplies turned into ashes. The shop owners have suffered a loss of more than Rs 10 lakh. The chairman of the Garjiya Temple Committee Kuber Singh Adhikari, committee’s treasurer Nishant Papne and outgoing councillor Bhuwan Dangwal among others also reached the temple complex. The officials said that they have provided all information regarding the loss of shopkeepers to the district administration to ensure they can get compensation as per the rules.
