Panchayat delimitation discriminatory for hill districts: Yashpal Arya

 PNS/ DEHRADUN

In latest news from Doon, the Congress veteran and the leader of the opposition in the Assembly Yashpal Arya took potshots at the State government, saying that the mountainous regions of the State have been facing blatant discrimination at the three-tier panchayat system due to its delimitation policy. He further said that the number of seats in each tier of the panchayat system in the mountainous districts is decreasing or remaining static with the implementation of the delimitation policy.

Explaining the discrimination, he said that while the seats are being delimited on the basis of population of 24,000 in the hill areas while in the plains the number is 50,000.  “I demand the State government to delimit the panchayat seats on the basis of population of 8,000 to 10,000 per zila panchayat seat in the mountainous districts,” he said, adding that this would bring a parity between the hills and plains and ensure smooth development through the rural representative system.
