In an effort to facilitate proper disposal of plastic waste in Uttarakhand, the Panchayati Raj department has installed 71 plastic waste compactors across the State. An official in the directorate of Panchayati Raj said that plastic waste is a major contributor to environmental degradation in the State. To address this issue, the Panchayati Raj ministry directed the Statet Panchayati Raj department to install compactors to crush plastic waste in August 2022, he added.
The official further added that following the direction of the ministry the Panchayati Raj department has installed 71 plastic waste compactors across the State. The ministry has directed the department to install a total of 95 compactors in the State. Due to some circumstances, the department was unable to install the said number of compactors till October. He said that the remaining 24 compactors will be installed by the end of December.
The official informed that the main objective of installing compactors is to combat the effects of global warming which have been becoming more evident in the State. The compactor crushes waste, especially plastic waste, making it easier to handle. The personnel then select the recyclable plastic waste from the compactor and send it to a recycling plant which is located in Haridwar. The recycled plastic waste can be used to make benches, window frames and various other items, he said.
