Following the State administration’s direction, the Panchayati Raj directorate has planned to plant four lakh trees across the State on the occasion of Harela as part of a comprehensive tree plantation initiative. Stating this, the deputy director of Panchayati Raj, Manoj Kumar Tiwari said that in response to the notable lack of trees in the State, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has instructed the linear departments to carry out extensive tree plantation in Uttarakhand. Considering this, a meeting was held with the departments and the chief secretary where the State administration instructed the Panchayati Raj department to plant two lakh trees during the upcoming monsoon season, he added.

Following the direction the department has decided to plant trees throughout the State. Going further, it aims to plant four lakh trees instead of two lakh across the State. He said that the tree plantation campaigns will commence on July 16, coinciding with the Harela festival celebrated in the State. Emphasising that on the day of Harela, two lakh trees will be planted across the State, he also said that the campaign will continue till August 15 to complete the planting of the remaining two lakh trees.

Tiwari informed that Gram Panchayats have been instructed to liaise with the Forest department, government and private nurseries for the proper implementation of large-scale plantation activities. He further emphasised that the maintenance of the trees will require regular monitoring every six months. To address this, additional employees will be recruited for the upkeep of the plantations planned across the State. Further, post-plantation meetings will be organised with the Gram Panchayats to review the number of plantations, species planted and other relevant factors, he added.
