Parking lots started in 13 new sites offered by locals in Doon

Parking of vehicles in more than 13 new parking lots have started in Dehradun after the district magistrate Sonika’s order that locals can use their vacant plot or space as public parking space without seeking any permission from any authorities concerned. The DM has issued this order last month considering the rising traffic congestion in various parts of the city due to lack of sufficient parking space.

The superintendent of police (Traffic) Akshay Konde said that 13 parking lots have started operating in seven locations of Dehradun. He said that three zones are situated in Bypass road, two each in Transport Nagar and General Mahadev Singh (GMS) Road and one each in Rajpur, Lalpul and East Canal Road. However, the number of people offering their lands for parking in the past one month is not as per the expectation of the authorities. It is mainly because many are still apprehensive to offer their land or empty space mainly in fear of encroachment on their property or potential pressure from authorities to convert the place permanently into a parking zone.

However, the SP clarified that authorities will ensure that the lands are not encroached in any way while adding that anybody offering the space for parking does not make them eligible to open a permanent parking space without necessary permissions. He said that the traffic police have also launched Uttarakhand’s first app based smart parking management system in association with the Park+ company through which locals can offer their vacant land as public parking space without any kind of involvement of any officer.

“Nobody needs to contact anybody to offer their land for parking. They can directly register their space for parking anytime. The land owner can even determine the rates they want to charge for parking of each vehicle but it is mandatory to display rates so that people can decide whether they want to park there or not. This initiative will not just resolve the parking issue but will provide employment to at least one or two people in each parking space,” said Konde.
