The Congress State chief spokesperson Garima Dasauni has said that the statement of the Pradesh Congress Committee president Karan Mahara on the domicile issue is being misunderstood. She said that the Congress has been fully supporting the demand of statehood activists on the issues of land laws and domicile since the beginning. During a Press conference held by Mahara on Monday on issues including the law and order situation in the State, he had stated in response to a question that detailed discussions should be held on the issue of 1950 as the cut off for domicile.

The Congress will soon call a meeting of its political affairs committee and hold discussion on this issue, he had said. According to Mahara, a strict land law as in the case of neighbouring Himachal Pradesh should also be implemented soon in Uttarakhand. He had earlier also extended the support of the party to the Uttarakhand Swabhiman Andolan and had exhorted the party members to participate in the rally held on Sunday in support of the demands for domicile and strict land law.

Dasauni said that on Mahara’s instructions, a large number of Congress members had participated in the rally. However, despite this, some newspapers had published the PCC president’s statement in an incorrect manner, she averred. This made some think that the Congress is not in favour of 1950 as the domicile cut off. She said that the party strongly rejects this. She further said that since the creation of Uttarakhand, the Congress party has worked in favour of the State’s issues and the interests of the people.
