Peace walk to be held in Doon today

A ‘peace walk’ will be organised on Sunday from the back gate of the National Institute for Empowerment of Persons with Visual Disabilities (NIEPVD) to elicit the government’s focus on the importance of trees. Citizens For Green Doon (CFGD) along with various other groups will be organising this walk.
CFGD member Ira Chauhan said that after the cancellation of the order to cut down over 200 trees on Cantt Road, they received information about the government’s announcement of works that would necessitate cutting down trees along Canal Road. She further informed about trees along the Canal Road being marked for cutting as part of another development project. She also highlighted other upcoming projects that will involve cutting down trees including the expansion of the airport, the new railway line to Mussoorie and the construction of a new four-lane highway from Jhajra to Mussoorie via the Sal and oak forests. She expressed concern about the recent development projects leading to more tree felling, despite the increased awareness of the importance of trees due to rising temperatures. She added that in response to this, CFGD and other groups will organise a peace walk on Sunday from the back gate of NIEPVD to protest against the continued felling of trees for these developments. Chauhan further urged local residents to participate in large numbers and join the peace walk.
Environmentalists also appealed to local residents to join a peace walk and raise awareness about the importance of trees. They further urged that the government should refrain from tree felling for development projects.
