Postgraduate doctors of all the government medical colleges across the State have postponed their ongoing agitation following assurances from the Health minister and secretary on Wednesday. The PG doctors across the State have been protesting for the past few days for a stipend hike.
The PG doctors are demanding that their stipend should be increased from Rs 69,000 to Rs 1.1 lakh. The PG doctors of Government Doon Medical College, Dehradun had started their protest on September 8.
The president of the Resident Doctors Association of GDMC, Dr Abhijeet Rathi informed that on Wednesday, they visited the secretariat to meet with the Health secretary regarding their demands. He stated that the Health secretary assured them that the proposal for increasing their stipend would be discussed in the cabinet and that it could be passed within this month. Additionally, the Health minister Subodh Uniyal personally visited the hospital to meet with the doctors, assuring them that their stipend was already being considered before the protest began. On the assurance given by the Health minister and secretary, doctors decided to postpone their stir for 15 days. Rathi said that the PG doctors will resume their agitation if no action on their demand is taken in 15 days.
It is important to mention that the prolonged strike by the postgraduate doctors has created significant challenges for patients at the government college hospitals of the State. Many have expressed concern over the difficulties they are facing due to the ongoing protest by the PG doctors
