Pithoragarh & Almora municipalities to become municipal corporations

The State government has decided to upgrade the Pithoragarh and Almora municipalities to municipal corporations.  The State will now have 10 municipal corporations.  A decision in this regard was taken in the meeting of the State cabinet chaired by chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Tuesday.

There was no official briefing on the cabinet decisions since the monsoon session of the Vidhan Sabha has been convened from August 21. However it is learnt that the cabinet took 36 decisions in its meeting. A decision to upgrade the municipal council of Doiwala from category III to I was also taken in the cabinet. At present the state has Dehradun, Haridwar, Roorkee, Kotdwar, Rishikesh, Haldwani, Kashipur and Rudrapur municipal corporations.

The cabinet also authorised the CM to take a decision on the issue of the reservation of seats in the Urban Local Bodies (ULB). The cabinet decided that the Uttarakhand public and private property damage recovery bill -2024 will be tabled in the upcoming monsoon session of the State assembly. The State government has already promulgated an ordinance to recover the damage to public and private property from the rioters.  In another decision the cabinet approved the proposal to amend the Uttar Pradesh Zamindari Abolition and Land Regulation act 1950.

 In an attempt to encourage investment in the tourism industry, the cabinet approved the proposal for the Uttarakhand tourism entrepreneurship development scheme-2024. The State government will provide free of cost land for setting up of a new Kendriya Vidhyalaya in Kotdwar. The cabinet gave its approval to the proposal to bring Uttarakhand sports university act -2024 in its meeting. The proposed law will help in giving an impetus to sports in the State.

 The cabinet also approved the proposal to increase the compensation on death of prisoners from existing Rs two lakh to Rs five lakhs.

A decision to reintroduce the one time settlement scheme in the mining department was also taken by the State cabinet. For it amendment in the Uttarakhand mining (illegal mining, transportation and storage) act 2024 will be made. The cabinet also approved the proposal to create seven posts at the newly constructed old age home of the social welfare department at Raiwala of Dehradun. There is a plan to construct one such home in every district of the State.

 The cabinet also approved a proposal to pitch for inclusion of Panch Kedar and Panch Badri in UNESCO’s world heritage sites. 

The cabinet gave its nod to the proposal of the urban development department to extend the area under the municipal council of Ramnagar and remove the Semigwad area from Karnprayag municipal council. Similarly the GB Pant University will be removed from the limits of the municipal council of Nagla. Paving the way for recruitments in the Uttarakhand State Council of Science and Technology (UCOST), the cabinet approved a proposal to unfreeze six posts in the body.
