The Dairy Development department of Uttarakhand is working on a plan to increase the population and the production of Ghee of Himalayan Badri cows in the state. In a meeting organised at the office of Integrated Cooperative Development project, the Cooperative secretary, BVRC Purushottam said that 300 litres of ghee is being made per month from the milk of cows of Badri breed which are reared in the Himalayan meadows. This Ghee is being sold at a price of Rs 2,500 per kilogramme in the markets of National Capital Region (NCR) Delhi and Bangalore. The secretary said that efforts should be made to encourage the farmers to rear Badri cows.
In her presentation the manager of Anchal Dairy, Aditi Dumoga said that though the Badri cow gives only three to four litres of milk in a day the price of its Ghee is many times more than that of a normal cow. She said that the variety of Badri cow was on the verge of extinction but the government efforts have received it. There is a breeding centre of the cow at Nariyal Gaon and now there are 140 cows there. Similarly the breeding centre of Karchi and Salna both in Joshimath has 300 cows. Apart from the presence of many nutrients, the milk and Ghee of Badri cow contains A-2 protein.
