Police act against name plates & rash driving

Another campaign starts today against violations by riders

On the directions of the Traffic directorate director, Kewal Khurana, the Uttarakhand police conducted a fortnight long drive against offences like display of titles and other invalid texts on the registration plate and rash driving. From Sunday, the police will conduct another drive against the two-wheeler riders found stunt biking, using modified silencers and high pressure horns.

During the drive which concluded on January 1, the police issued 6,488 challans and collecting a compounding fee of Rs 31,51,300 from the vehicle users found using name plates on private vehicles while 2,756 challans were issued, 211 vehicles seized and Rs 7,47,500 was collected in compounding fees from those found guilty of rash driving or speeding.

According to the police, some people have been found displaying political, religious and caste related titles on their private vehicles. In the past, some vehicle users had been found using illegal name plates on their vehicles and these persons were also found to be involved in some criminal incidents. Under the Motor Vehicles Act 1988 and Central Motor Vehicles Act 1989, apart from the authorised registration plate, it is illegal to display invalid name plates including displays of political, religious or caste related titles on the vehicles. Apart from this, speeding and rash driving have been found to be major reasons for traffic accidents in the state. Considering this, the police conducted a special campaign against such violations in the state from December 17 to January 1.

Apart from this, the police will begin another fortnight-long campaign from Sunday against stunt biking, use of modified silencers and high pressure horns on two wheelers. The traffic police, city patrol unit and civil defence have been directed to take strict action against those found guilty of such violations.
