Police announce traffic plan expecting rise in tourist flux on weekend

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

In light of poor traffic management during last weekend’s surge in tourist numbers to Rishikesh, Mussoorie and Dehradun, the police announced a special weekend traffic plan to manage the anticipated pressure on roads.

The plan will remain in effect until 10 PM on Sunday, with the possibility of extension depending on traffic conditions, as per the officials. For heavy vehicles, specific holding points have been designated to prevent congestion within the city limits. Heavy vehicles heading from the Raipur area to Rishikesh will be held at the Maldevta checkpoint and near the Rajiv Gandhi cricket stadium.

Similarly, those coming from the Thano area toward Rishikesh will be stopped at Ranipokhari. In Patelnagar, heavy vehicles will be halted at Nayagaon and Transport Nagar, and not allowed to enter the city. In Doiwala, they will be stopped at Lal Tappad, Bhaniyawala service lane, Harrawala and Kuanwala. In the Sahaspur area, holding points will be at Dharmawala and Sabhawala. The officials informed that for smaller vehicles, diversion routes will be activated based on the traffic pressure within the city.

If congestion occurs, vehicles coming from Haridwar will be diverted at Bhaniyawala trisection and Doiwala through Durga Chowk, Bhuiyan Mandir, Thano Road, Maharana Pratap Chowk, Maldevta and Krishali Chowk toward Mussoorie. Those coming from Rishikesh will be rerouted via Dehradun Airport trisection, SDRF trisection, Thano Road, Maharana Pratap Chowk, Maldevta and Krishali Chowk toward Mussoorie.

They said that vehicles approaching from Asharodi will be diverted through Shimla Bypass, St Jude Chowk, Kamla Palace, Ballupur Chowk, Cantt Chowk and CSD trisection toward Kimadi Road and onward to Mussoorie. If the traffic load increases excessively, small vehicles entering from Paonta Sahib will be diverted from Vikasnagar via Yamuna Bridge and Kempty Falls to reach Mussoorie, as per the officials. In case of traffic congestion in the Rispana or Jogiwala area, vehicles bound for Rishikesh or Haridwar will be diverted from Kargi Chowk via Dudhli and Doiwala. Light vehicles arriving from Haridwar or Rishikesh and heading toward Sahastradhara will be rerouted through Dehradun Airport trisection or Bhaniyawala trisection, Bhuiyan Mandir, Thano Road, Maharana Pratap Chowk and Maldevta to reach their destination.

The police have urged travellers to remain patient and follow instructions, as the revised plan aims to prevent the kind of gridlock that occurred during the last weekend when poor coordination led to severe traffic snarls across Dehradun and its connecting routes.
