The police have arrested one man accused of the double murder which came to light in the Dhaulas area of Premnagar on Wednesday. Dehradun senior superintendent of police Janmejaya Khanduri revealed the details of the cases to the media here on Saturday.
The SSP said that Dhaulas resident Subhash Sharma had informed the police on Wednesday that his wife Unnati Sharma and domestic helper Shyam were missing. The police reached the site and on searching the area found the bodies of the duo covered by plastic sheet behind the home near the kitchen. Khanduri visited the scene of crime and issued directions for swift action in the double-murder case. Reviewing footage from CCTV cameras in the area, the police spotted some suspicious persons. During questioning, Sharma informed that a man named Aditya had come looking for a job in their home some days ago. Unnati Sharma had told him that since they already had a domestic helper, they couldn’t employ him at their home but said she would try to get him work elsewhere. The police then asked the locals nearby about Aditya and learnt that he had borrowed a considerable sum of money from his relatives and others. In the past he had tried to commit suicide by poison due to financial duress. After the double-murder, he got himself admitted to Government Doon Medical Hospital from where he was discharged a day later on Friday. As his appearance also matched that of a suspect spotted on CCTV, the police took him into custody for questioning. During police interrogation, he confessed to having carried out the double murder. He was arrested on Friday and will be presented in the court soon.
During interrogation, the 20-year old Aditya said that he had worked earlier for the Sharmas on daily wages for some days. He had gone to them recently looking for work but there was no vacancy. Unnati Sharma tried getting him work at a shop but that did not work out. The accused said that he thought that he would not get work at the Sharma residence until Shyam was working there so planned to kill him. Early on Friday morning, he sneaked into the Sharma residence compound and was trying to enter the home from the kitchen when he was met by Shyam. Before Shyam could fully react, Aditya used an iron rod lying on the ground and hit him twice on the head. Just then, Unnati Sharma came out of the kitchen and screamed on seeing Shyam’s condition while also spotting Aditya who was trying to hide. Before she could re-enter the home, he hit her on the head with the iron rod. The accused then strangled both of them to ensure they were dead.
