Police arrested four young men under section 151 of Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) during the intensive checking campaign in Clement Town area of Dehradun in the wee hours of Friday. The police also questioned 70 young men and imposed challan on 15 men under the Police Act. Four vehicles including a car, two scooties and an Enfield motorbike were also seized by the police. The officials said that the police team also asked owners of restaurants, cafes and shopkeepers to close their establishments by 10 PM and to ensure that no crowd is lingering there unnecessarily late at night.

The officials said that this campaign was run under the supervision of circle officer Pankaj Gairola after the recent order of the senior superintendent of police Daleep Singh Kunwar to maintain law and order at night in areas with prominent colleges and universities. He issued this order after a fight broke out between two groups of students late on Wednesday night on a road in the Clement Town area that soon turned violent. The students allegedly used sticks and knives in the fight that led to serious injuries to three students. The officials stated that both groups on Thursday filed FIRs against each other and the police are investigating the matter.

The SSP also suspended senior sub-inspector and night officer Rakesh Panwar and sub inspector Satyendra Bhati on Thursday for dereliction of duty at the time of the incident. The officials said that the police will take action as per the law against those found roaming unnecessarily on the roads late at night. Police will also send reports of such students to the colleges and universities concerned who are found roaming late at night, added the officials.
