The police arrested a man Usman (24) on charges of illegal cattle slaughter in Dehradun following a high-intensity chase and encounter early on Wednesday. He was returning to Sahaspur from Saharanpur to carry out another such activity when he was apprehended on Wednesday, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said. He informed that Sahaspur police received information about the remains of two slaughtered bovines found near a field in Shankarpur in Selaqui area on Tuesday. Upon reaching the scene, police discovered the remains of two bovines that had been illegally slaughtered. A veterinary expert confirmed the meat was bovine.
The police registered an FIR against unknown persons under section 325 of Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and sections 3, 5, 11 of the Uttarakhand Cow Protection Act. The SSP said that during the investigation, it was found that the cattle had been stolen from the Selaqui area. A complaint had already been registered at Selaqui police station by Lajja Devi, a resident of Selaqui. Considering this, the SSP formed multiple teams to crack the case and arrest those involved. The teams reviewed CCTV footage of routes leading to and from the crime scene while gathering intelligence from informants. Singh said that early on February 5, police near Timli in Dehradun attempted to stop a suspect on a motorcycle coming from Saharanpur. “Instead of stopping, the suspect broke through the barrier and sped toward Sahaspur.
The police immediately prompted an alert to nearby police stations that led to an extensive manhunt. Later, police spotted a motorcycle matching the description. Upon noticing the police, the suspect tried to turn back but lost control, causing the bike to skid. He then attempted to flee into the jungle, opening fire on the pursuing officers. In response, police fired back, injuring the suspect in the leg. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment,” he said. The SSP informed that the accused was identified as Usman alias Kalu, a resident of Saharanpur district, Uttar Pradesh. Police also recovered a country-made pistol of 315 bore, a live cartridge and a spent shell from him.
The SSP said that during interrogation, Usman confessed that late on February 3, he and his associates, Lalu and Mujammil, both residents of Sahaspur, stole two cows from a Haripur slum. They allegedly slaughtered the cattle in a field near the Sarna River in Shankarpur and sold the beef to Mujammil’s contacts. He said that Usman had been involved in cattle slaughter for a long time and had multiple cases registered against him in Dehradun and Saharanpur. The police are now actively searching for his accomplices and other individuals involved in the illegal trade, Singh added.
