Police arrest man for threatening vendor over religion

Haridwar police arrested a man on Thursday for allegedly threatening a street vendor and making objectionable remarks about his religious belief in the Kankhal area. The incident came to light after a video of the act had gone viral on social media on Wednesday. The accused has been identified as Chanchal Bhardwaj.

According to police, Bhardwaj himself had posted the video online. After the clip spread widely on social media, police took immediate action and registered a case against him under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), police said and added that he had been later arrested by the Kankhal police team.

Sharing details, the city circle officer, Shishu Pal Singh said that the police had received information about the video on February 25. In the video, the accused was allegedly seen threatening a person belonging to a particular religion and making inappropriate comments. “Police acted promptly after verifying the facts and arrested the accused,” he said.

He further added that another video showing a compromise in the matter was also circulated on social media.

Police have warned the accused that strict action would be taken if he repeats such things in future.
