Police arrest snatching accused in Dehradun

A 33-year-old Dehradun resident was arrested by the police on Thursday on the charge of snatching the purse of a woman on July 3. The man has claimed that he was going through a financial crisis due to his ongoing divorce case and needed money, said the senior superintendent of police, Daleep Singh Kunwar. He said that a woman named Rajni Joshi filed a complaint on Monday stating that a man pushed her down when she was alighting from a Vikram and looted her handbag that contained Rs 40,000 cash, a mobile, an ATM card and other necessary documents.
The woman had withdrawn the money from the bank the same day. Considering this complaint, the police started the investigation by analysing footage of several CCTV cameras installed in the area where the accused robbed the woman. The SSP said that the police gathered more information about the man they suspected to be the culprit and activated the informer system to identify him. He said that the police received information about the suspected man being spotted with his Scooty late in New Cant road late on Wednesday night. Kunwar said, “The man was identified as Mayank Arora who lives in the Rajendranagar area.
The police found three mobile phones, ATM cards, and other documents from his scooty during the checking. He has confessed to looting the woman. He said that he was chasing the woman since she withdrew money from the bank in Astley Hall. He attacked her to loot her money when he got the chance in the Rajpur Road area.” The SSP said that the accused has claimed that he has done MBA but is currently going through a financial crisis mainly due to his ongoing divorce proceedings. “He has stated that he had to spend lots of money on lawyer’s fees and other court proceedings due to which he decided to rob somebody immediately after they withdrew money from the bank to meet his expenses,” said Kunwar. The SSP also announced to reward the police team with Rs 5,000 to nab the culprit within four days.
