Thursday, 18 July 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

Police arrested two men on charges of stealing parts of crash barriers installed on about three kilometres stretch on Sahastradhara Road in Dehradun. The police also recovered two pieces of iron channels, 78 nuts, 65 washers, bolts and other items from the possession of the both accused worth about Rs 25,0000, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh. He said that the additional assistant engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD) Sudarshan Singh registered a complaint at Rajpur police station on Monday that some unknown persons damaged the crash barriers installed on the roadside on a stretch of about three kilometres from Krishali Chowk to Sahastradhara Road.

The thieves stole the parts of the crash barriers making their installation useless on roadside areas. Considering this, the police registered a complaint against unknown accused under relevant sections and started investigation. Singh said that the police team checked 162 CCTV cameras at the crime scene and its surroundings to identify the culprits.

The team also conducted the physical verification of about 19 accused and gathered information about the current status of those accused who were previously jailed on charges of theft. During checking late on Tuesday, the police arrested the two accused Shatrughan Mehta (52) and Pawan Kumar (19) near a barrier on Sahastradhara Road, Singh said. He informed that according to the accused, they stole all parts of the crash barriers installed on the stretch of the Sahastradhara road within the past eight to 10 days.

They told the police that no street lights on that route and negligent movement of people at night made it easier for them to steal the parts of crash barriers. They used to steal parts in small amounts every day to avoid any suspicion on them. They will be soon presented in court, the SSP added.
