The police registered a case against 10 DAV college students and NSUI members including Harish Joshi who had climbed atop a BSNL tower on Tuesday to protest against the delay in announcement of the student union election date. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that the control room received reports on Tuesday that three to four young men were threatening a BSNL security guard and attempting to ascend the tower. As the guard confronted them, three of the boys fled the scene while Harish Joshi climbed the tower. He said that the police engaged in negotiations with Joshi over the phone and asked him to descend safely. However, he refused to come down and continued to chant slogans related to his demands, threatening to jump from the tower if his grievances were not addressed. As tensions rose, Joshi’s companions gathered below, encouraging him to jump, further complicating the situation. Their actions disrupted vital BSNL services, drawing significant public attention and concern.
Singh said that police along with the Fire department and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams managed to safely bring Joshi down from the tower after extensive efforts. Considering this, the police registered a case at the Kotwali Dalanwala police station against 10 named individuals for various offenses including inciting suicide, obstructing government work, intimidating security personnel and causing public disturbance, he added.
