Following the recent incident of objectionable behaviour by a shopkeeper with a woman in Paltan Bazaar, the Dehradun police conducted a major verification drive in the area on Tuesday. The drive was conducted under the supervision of the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh who was also present at the spot. The police detained 134 suspicious persons and conducted their verification at the Police Line. The SSP also urged shopkeepers to cooperate during the campaign to ensure the safety and security of the area. Singh said that the police interacted with the representatives of the local businessmen and discussed what can be done to improve safety in the market. Suggestions like setting up a dedicated women’s booth, deploying female police officers for patrolling and increasing the number of CCTV cameras in the market area. The police will take action on these suggestions, he said. Responding to claims that many people are trying to make the recent incident a community matter, Singh said that crime has no religion or caste and strict action will be taken against anyone who takes the law into their hands or tries to disturb harmony, law and order in the district. The secretary of Doon Udyog Vyapar Mandal (DUVM) Sunil Masson also expressed appreciation to the police for taking a strict stance against those involved in misconduct in the market. He said that it is important to maintain a clean and safe environment for both traders and customers in the market areas and both police and local businessmen will work together to ensure it.
