Monday, 05 AUGUST 2024 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The police arrested two gang members who were behind a series of chain snatching incidents targeting women while disguised as Kanwadias during the Kanwad Yatra in Dehradun and nearby places. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that the gang, hailing from the Laksar region of Haridwar exploited the dense crowds of the Kanwad Yatra. “Disguised as Kanwadias, they mingled with the devotees to carry out their chain snatching activities. After executing their crimes, they would blend back into the crowd to evade capture. The daylight chain snatchings and robberies were executed simultaneously across various police jurisdictions in Dehradun like Nehru Colony, Doiwala and Raiwala during the Kanwad Yatra. Since they carried out these crimes during the peak of Kanwad Yatra, it was not possible to check every Kanwadia at that time” the SSP said. He informed that considering the gravity of the situation, a special task force was formed to apprehend these criminals. The police finally arrested them from Dudhli Road on Sunday. The accused have been identified as Gurmit and Vijender. Both accused are habitual offenders, with multiple robbery cases registered against them in Dehradun and other districts. The police also recovered two stolen gold chains from them. It was revealed during the interrogation that they have two more accomplices, Rahul and Vikas. The investigation is ongoing and the absconding accused will be nabbed soon, the SSP added.
