Police gear up for by-elections in Badrinath and Manglaur

The police have so far seized about 700 litres of illegal liquor from Manglaur and Badrinath Vidhan Sabha constituencies where ensuing by-elections will be held on July 10. This was informed by the district in-charges of Haridwar and Chamoli in the review meeting of the by-elections preparations held by the additional director general of police (Crime, Law and Order) AP Anshuman on Friday. In view of ensuing by-elections in Manglaur and Badrinath constituencies, the ADG held a meeting with deputy inspector general (DIG) of police of Garhwal range Karan Singh Nagnyal, Haridwar senior superintendent of police Pramendra Dobhal and Chamoli superintendent of police Parvesh Panwar. They discussed the proceedings and preparations for the polling day and the votes counting day for the election. They informed the ADG about the police force deployed for the by-elections and the departure of polling parties. They said that both districts have made preparations as per the guidelines of the Election Commission of India. For the Badrinath by-election, the administration has set up 203 polling centres and 210 polling stations. Among these, 26 polling stations are considered critical and will be monitored by six Flying Squad Teams (FSTs) and eight Static Surveillance Teams (SSTs). For the Mangalore by-election, the officials informed that the administration has set up 64 polling centres and 132 polling stations. Among these, 45 polling stations are categorised as critical which will be monitored with the help of three FSTs and four SSTs. The officials further informed that Chamoli district has been divided into 53 sectors, eight zones, and two super zones, while Haridwar district has been divided into 14 sectors, three zones and one super zone. In both districts, PAC, home guard, and two companies of Central Armed Paramilitary Force (CAPF) have been allocated for the elections in addition to the district police force. As per the ECI guidelines, 2,382 licensed weapons have been deposited out of the total 2,480 licensed weapons in Chamoli district. In the Manglaur constituency, a total of 1,441 licensed weapons out of 1,536 licensed weapons have been deposited till now. Under preventive action of the police, a total of 39 cases were registered in Chamoli district, resulting in the challan of 120 anti-social elements. In Haridwar district, 268 cases were registered that led to the challan of 3,117 anti-social elements. Since the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in both districts, the police recovered 342 litres of illegal liquor worth Rs. 3.24 lakh and 0.851 kilogrammes of narcotics worth Rs. 1.7 lakh in Chamoli district. In Haridwar district, the police recovered 331 litres of illegal liquor worth Rs 1.21 lakh and 0.0279 kilogrammes of narcotics worth Rs 8.37 lakh. The police along with FST and SST have recovered a total of Rs 13.45 lakh illegal cash in Haridwar since the implementation of MCC. Anshuman also directed the officials that patrolling and checking must be carried out continuously in both constituencies and border areas while maintaining coordination with departments concerned.
