Police gear up for New Year celebrations

Thursday, 28 December 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The Dehradun police are gearing up for traffic management during the New Year celebrations across the district. The police have also made arrangements according to which, navigating apps like Mapls will help people to reach their destinations via alternate routes. “People arriving from other cities usually use navigating apps like Google Maps and Mapls to reach their destination. This time while using the Mapls app, they will be able to get live updates of traffic. It will also show less congested alternate routes for tourist destinations.

For instance, every tourist does not have to go to Mussoorie via Dehradun. There are some good alternate routes which will be displayed to tourists through the app. We tried this plan on Christmas and it really helped the police in traffic management,” said the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh. He said that the police have made special arrangements in tourist places like Mussoorie where footfall is expected to be quite high on December 30, 31 and January 1.

He said that police will also show the traffic situation on digital displays installed on roads leading to Mussoorie from Dehradun. “If a car is stuck in the middle of the road due to some unseen circumstances in Mussoorie, the information can be displayed on the digital display to people to ensure they can decide whether to go ahead or return. I believe very few people return due to heavy traffic when they plan to go to a tourist place during vacations or celebrations but we still want them to know before they move ahead on the road,” said Singh.

Besides this, he also informed that, unlike last year, the police have no plan to restrict the entry of those tourists to Mussoorie who have not made bookings in hotels. “We are taking all measures to ensure minimum traffic jams on the weekend and on January 1 but we have decided not to ban the entry of any tourist in Mussoorie as it does not really make considerable difference in the traffic and parking situation,” said Singh.

The police recently held a meeting with representatives of hotels in Mussoorie and asked them to ensure proper parking for their guests within their premises. He also said that the police have also divided the whole district into zones and sectors to ensure proper monitoring of traffic, security arrangements and law. The drones will mainly be used to keep the roads encroachment-free which is one of the main reasons for traffic congestion in Dehradun, he added.
