The police on Sunday imposed a penalty of over Rs 32.8 lakh on 328 landlords in Dehradun for not getting their tenants verified as per the rules. The police conducted a large-scale verification drive on Sunday, checking the identities of 1,574 individuals, including tenants, domestic helpers and other residents from outside the State. As part of the verification drive, authorities fined 328 landlords a total of Rs 32.8 lakh for failing to verify their tenants and ensuring compliance with security regulations. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that the verification drive was carried out across both urban and rural areas of the district with the aim to strengthen law enforcement and prevent potential security threats. He informed that multiple police teams were deployed to different localities to verify the identities of tenants and other outsiders residing in rented accommodations. Besides penalising landlords, the police also detained 47 suspicious individuals for questioning. Further action was taken against 73 people found violating various regulations under Section 81 of the Police Act, leading to fines totalling Rs 22,000. Singh emphasised the importance of tenant verification to prevent illegal activities and maintain public safety. He urged landlords to comply with verification requirements to avoid legal consequences and contribute to a safer community. Such verification drives will be conducted across the district regularly, he added.
