Police impose Rs 50 lakh challan of on over 500 people for keeping unverified tenants and house helps

Amid the public uproar that criminal activities have been increasing due to anti-social elements residing in Dehradun, the police conducted a verification drive and imposed challan of more than Rs 50 lakh on over 500 house owners for keeping unverified people as tenants and house helps. The officials said that the police on Saturday conducted the verification drive in Patelnagar, Dalanwala and Selaqui areas of Dehradun. The police challaned 103 landlords under the Police Act who had not got their tenants verified and collected a revenue of Rs 13.2 lakh. Besides this, the police also brought 73 persons to police stations who were unable to produce any identity documents during the drive. The police questioned them and took necessary action against them under the Police Act. The officials said that the police also conducted the drive on Sunday in the rural areas of the city. The police started the drive in the morning and challaned 394 landlords till the evening under the Police Act. They were fined over Rs 39 lakh. The police also brought 262 suspicious persons who could not show any valid documents on the spot to the police stations for questioning. The police questioned them and imposed penalties on 146 persons under the Police Act and collected Rs 39,250. The Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that all the police station in-charges have been directed to regularly conduct such drives to ensure no unverified people reside in their respective areas. The police will also make the people aware of the verification process of tenants. The police will also take strict legal action against those who deliberately continue to keep unverified persons as tenants and house helps risking the security of the people here, he added.
