Police install SVD cameras in Dehradun to curb overspeeding

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

The Traffic Directorate has installed radar equipped Speed Violation Detection (SVD) cameras in Dehradun to monitor and penalise overspeeding vehicles. These cameras have been installed at Mohkampur, Premnagar and near DIT so far as part of a pilot project, as per the officials. They informed that these cameras capture images of vehicles exceeding speed limits and challan actions are processed through the Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) at Information Technology Development Agency (ITDA).

They informed that the installation follows a directive from the Uttarakhand High Court in response to the PIL case Lalit Miglani versus State of Uttarakhand. In a video conference hearing on February 20, 2025, the court ordered the implementation of technology that will send overspeeding alerts to both vehicle owners and nearby police stations. The objective is to intercept speeding vehicles and take necessary action to reduce road accidents.

The officials said that to comply with this directive, the Directorate has upgraded its speed violation system by integrating an SMS gateway. With this update, when a vehicle is detected overspeeding, automated alerts are sent to the vehicle owner, the nearest police station, control rooms, traffic police personnel and Cheetah mobile patrolling units. This allows police officers to trace and intercept the vehicle in real time, the officials said.

They informed that in the first phase, the system has been implemented in Dehradun, where over mobile numbers of 200 police personnel have been integrated into the network. Based on its effectiveness, the initiative will be extended to other districts in Uttarakhand, they added.
