The director general of police Ashok Kumar issued an alert in Dehradun, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar districts on Friday as a precaution considering the possibility of pro-Khalistan leader and fugitive Amritpal Singh entering Uttarakhand. He said that the police are conducting intensive checking on the borders of all three districts and in other areas. He said that these three districts were also significantly affected by terrorism in the 90s.
The additional director general of police (Law and Order) V Murugesan said that the Punjab police have informed them that the last trail of the absconding Singh was reportedly found in Haryana and he can possibly try to hide in Uttarakhand too. All senior superintendents of police, especially of Dehradun, Haridwar and Udham Singh Nagar have been directed to conduct checking and take action against suspicious persons, added Murugesan. The police on March 21 had also registered a complaint against a man from Kashipur of Udham Singh Nagar for allegedly supporting Singh who has been on the run since March 18 by uploading posts on social media in his support.
According to the Punjab police, a total of 207 persons have been arrested for disturbing peace and harmony in Punjab out of which, 30 have been found involved in substantive criminal activities while the remaining are under preventive arrest. Those arrested include Baljit Kaur, a resident of the Shahabad area, for allegedly harbouring absconding Amritpal Singh and his associate Papalpreet Singh at her home. The last known location of Singh was in Haryana as per the Punjab authorities due to which, the Uttarakhand DGP has directed SSPs of Haridwar, Dehradun and Udham Singh Nagar to remain alert as these districts may have scope for Amritpal Singh to get some support.
