The traffic police issued over 89.85 thousand challans for overspeeding vehicles in Dehradun in 2023 and collected a fine of Rs 2.37 crore through the Speed Violation Detection System (SVDS), which is currently installed only in Dehradun district. The number of challans issued via SVDS is almost twice those issued last year, as per the officials.
According to the data provided by the traffic directorate, 49.80 thousand challans were issued through SVDS and a penalty of Rs 1.46 crore was collected in 2022. The officials said that since overspeeding is one of the main reasons for fatal accidents in the State, such challans help the police to make passengers abide by traffic rules. Besides this, the police also issued over 51,000 challans via interceptors, 12,180 via speed radars, 18,722 from towing machines and 16,503 from highway traffic patrol cars.
The directorate had also appointed an agency in 2023 on PPP mode to act against illegally parked vehicles using private cranes in Dehradun and Haridwar. In Dehradun district, police collected Rs 53.43 lakh by issuing 10,539 challans from January to November 2023 towed by private cranes. The officials also informed that a total of 1,405, 1,674 and 1687 road accidents were registered across the State in 2021, 2022 and 2023 respectively.
In these accidents, 1,091 got injured in 2021, 1,616 in 2022 and 1,476 in 2023. The number of people who died in road accidents in 2021 was 820 but this number increased to 1,042 in 2022 and 1,050 in 2023, as per the official data. The officials said that the directorate will also take new initiatives this year to minimise the number of road accidents across the State.
