Protesters claim Govt & police misusing power to suppress them
The police on Thursday resorted to lathi-charge on unemployed youths who staged a massive protest outside the Gandhi Park in Dehradun on Thursday. Many of the protesting youth also indulged in stone pelting which reportedly injured some police personnel, damaged government vehicles and some shops. The police also detained about 400 protesters and took them to the district jail in the evening. A heavy police force was present on the spot along with senior officials of district administration. Hundreds of unemployed youths started a protest on Wednesday against the state government demanding a CBI probe into irregularities in various recruitment examinations conducted by Uttarakhand Subordinate Services Selection Commission (UKSSSC) and Uttarakhand Public Service Commission (UKPSC). They also demanded postponement of all recruitment examinations till the government brings a stringent anti-copying law in the State. However, the protest turned ugly on Thursday after police lathi-charged some protesters and detained some youths including president of Uttarakhand Berozgar Sangh Bobby Panwar. Hundreds of angry youth staged a protest under the banner of the Berozgar Sangh on Thursday claiming that the government and the police force are misusing their power to suppress their voices. The traffic remained severely affected on Rajpur Road and nearby routes throughout the day due to the protest. The police also tried to remove the protestors from the road to prevent public nuisance near the heart of the city but the protesting youth did not budge. The district magistrate Sonika and city magistrate Kusum Kandwal also arrived on the spot and appealed to the protesters to end their protest. The police resorted to lathi charge when the protesters, initially protesting near Gandhi Park, started marching towards the Clock Tower, crossing the barricades contrary to police instructions. A clash broke out on the spot and the protesters started pelting stones at the police personnel and also damaged some police vehicles. Police later called in five vehicles including three buses, and detained about 400 protesters, including Bobby Panwar, in the evening. After this, most of the protestors could be seen leaving the protest site.
