The Dehradun police nabbed a 24-year-old drug addict for the murder of a senior citizen who used to run a shop in the Badowala area of the city. The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police and Dehradun SSP, Janmejaya Khanduri informed that the son of the deceased Manish Tomar had filed a complaint on Friday that an unknown person had hit his father on the head with a heavy object and looted money from the shop. The victim was severely injured and had died during treatment in the hospital on Monday.
Khanduri said that during the investigation, the police recovered footage from the CCTV cameras installed in the shop that showed the accused hitting the victim. The police inquired the nearby locals about the man in the footage who identified him as a 24-year-old man Vivek Panwar alias Nattu from Patelnagar. The SSP said that the police tracked the movement of the accused through various CCTV cameras installed near the areas of the crime scene and other possible locations in the district and finally nabbed him on Tuesday from the Premnagar area. “The accused has told during the investigation that he is a drug addict. Since he did not have money to buy drugs that day, he decided to rob the deceased as he was old and used to stay alone in the shop.
The accused has told us that he was a regular in the deceased’s shop. He arrived in his shop at 2:30 PM on Friday and hit him repeatedly with a heavy iron object and robbed Rs 4,500,” informed Khanduri. He said that the police have recovered the weapon used in murder and is investigating whether the accused has been involved in any other crimes in the past.
