Police arrested a man within 24 hours after he allegedly carried out the theft of lakhs of rupees in Dehradun’s Mahindra showroom along Haridwar Bypass Road late on Sunday. The superintendent of police (City) Sarita Dobhal said that the Nehru Colony police received a complaint that some unknown thieves broke the lock of the Mahindra showroom and stole cash worth lakhs of rupees in the wee hours of December 24. The money was reportedly kept in the cupboard of the accountant’s office which had no security features. She said that four police teams were formed to investigate the case. The teams inspected the showroom and found that the incident site was on the ground floor of the under-construction building of Mahindra showroom where no CCTV was installed for security. “The teams observed that there is an open space from both sides to go inside the showroom which has no doors. There was also no guard at the place from where the cash is said to have been stolen.  The cupboard from where the cash was allegedly stolen was also an ordinary tin box. There were 150 labourers from different States who were also working in the building. Since the police got no help from CCTV, the police teams intensified their manual policing and started interrogating the labourers. They also started the verification of suspicious persons,” said Dobhal. She said that on Monday, the police got a tip that a habitual criminal named Deepak Kumar (32), a resident of Dehradun’s Clement Town area was seen spending a lot of money. He was also allegedly found carrying several bundles of Rs 500 notes. Based on the information received, the police arrested the accused from the Daudwala area late on Monday. The police also recovered Rs 1.03 lakh in cash from his pocket out of Rs 31.24 lakh stolen money. On strict interrogation, the accused confessed to stealing money from the Mahindra showroom. He also informed that he had kept the rest of the stolen money hidden at his sister’s house which has been recovered by the police, the SP said. The accused informed that he had spent Rs 20,754 on drugs and other purchases. She said that the accused was sent to jail and will be produced before the court soon for further proceedings.
