The police have penalised over 2,570 drivers using drones for crossing stop lines and jumping red lights in the past one year in the Dehradun district, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh. He informed that all 49 traffic junctions in Dehradun will also undergo a comprehensive review to make necessary changes to improve traffic management and ensure road safety. The administration will also repaint all stop lines and zebra crossings in these 49 junctions to ensure clarity for both motorists and pedestrians as many of these markings have faded due to ongoing road construction and resurfacing, causing inconvenience and increasing the risk of accidents. The SSP said that in a bid to enhance road safety and improve traffic management, the Dehradun Police have taken significant steps to address reckless driving and violations of traffic rules. During a recent road safety committee meeting, the SSP had proposed several measures aimed at controlling vehicle speed and reducing road accidents. These included the installation of rumble strips on key routes, increasing the number of traffic signals, and repainting stop lines and zebra crossings at busy intersections. The committee approved these recommendations and a joint team comprising police, Public Works Department (PWD) and Regional Transport Office (RTO) officials was formed to oversee their implementation. Singh said that the city has been divided into five traffic zones for better management which are Clock Tower to Mussoorie Diversion, Clock Tower to Premnagar, Clock Tower to ISBT, Survey Chowk to Sahastradhara, Raipur, Kishanpur Chowk and Survey Chowk to Rispana, Jogiwala and Kargi junctions. Each zone will be inspected by the joint team to identify link roads where rumble strips are necessary for traffic regulation and pedestrian safety. He stated that these measures are vital for ensuring smoother traffic flow and safeguarding the lives of both drivers and pedestrians.
