Police probe daylight burglary in senior citizen’s home

The police are investigating a theft carried out in a locked home in broad daylight on May 14 along the Haridwar Road. The theft of cash and valuables worth lakhs of rupees was committed in the fourth floor residence of retired official Devendra Dhyani in Mantra Apartments in Mohkampur area when he had gone out of town after locking his home.
The incident has left the residents in the locality alarmed as it is suspected that some person familiar with the locality and the activities of the resident was involved in the crime.
According to the victim, he was informed by a neighbour on May 14 about his house being burgled on that day. He returned home on the same day to ascertain that gold and silver valuables along with cash- all amounting to about Rs 12 lakh to Rs 15 lakh were stolen from his home.
“The theft is suspected to have been carried out between 10 AM and 11 AM. The home opposite mine on the fourth floor was also bolted from outside by the culprit/s to prevent the residents from coming out. We have lodged an FIR and are told that the police have questioned a possible suspect and also checked the CCTV camera footage from the main road outside the apartments,” said Dhyani.
The police have registered a case under section 380 of the Indian Penal Code and are investigating the matter.
Meanwhile, the locals are apprehensive about the safety in the area considering that the theft was carried out in broad daylight in an apartment block located on the busy Haridwar Road.
